Jessica Duchen: Il Volo may be many things, but opera they are not

It makes a pleasant change from gangsta rap, I suppose. Three singing Italian boys in leather jackets looking suave. Teenage girls the world over screaming and fainting. Turning teenagers on to opera, they say. Whatever will those clever marketing people think of next?
This Svengali-led recording act are expressive; they seem to be enjoying themselves; they do a passable imitation of high notes in "O Sole Mio"; they're not bad for their age. But that's not what Il Volo is really about.
Instead, watching their videos, you remember what it was like to be a teenager who indulged in wild daydreams about Latin lovers in the sundrenched Mediterranean.
So this has nothing to do with opera. It isn't even "crossover", any more than Katherine Jenkins is, or Hayley Westenra, or any of those other singers who are not crossing over from anything because this is all they do.
Sure, some opera singers do cross over and can do so magnificently. Rolando Villazón sings leading roles in the great international opera houses and also makes albums of movie songs. Bryn Terfel can sing anything he likes, from Wagner to rugby anthems. Actual opera involves not only singing but acting, becoming a character, working with a director and a conductor and – please note – no microphone within a 10-mile radius. If Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca fancy having a shot at that, fine, let them try.
Il Volo is not opera. Il Volo is a machine for the artificial creation of dreams. They're turning teenage girls on to opera, runs the legend. No, they aren't. They're just turning teenage girls on. And making them, or their parents, pay for the downloads.

*Well! Since I try to report EVERYTHING about Il Volo, I MUST include the negative. This "opera critic" says Il Volo does NOT sing opera. Do I agree?? NO! Yes, they are attractive and swoon worthy. But, from my experience (going to their concert), they are not just swoon worthy, they are very very talented singers of opera. Just saying, but the majority of the audience WAS older folks. My friend and I were one of the few "teen girls". And another thing, I don't believe Il Volo ever said they sang opera. Maybe their record label did, but I know from interviews the boys specifically said they sing OPERATIC POP. Not exclusively opera.

Never mind the Three Tenors – here are the Three Teenors

They have been called the "three teenors", a trio of Italian operatic prodigies whose arias are greeted with Justin Bieber-style screaming.
After conquering Europe and the US, Il Volo will be unveiled before British television viewers tonight, on a mission to melt the hearts of teenage fans with one doe-eyed burst of "O Sole Mio".
Crossover "pop-opera" has become a lucrative genre for a record industry hit by declining physical sales. Il Divo, the multinational operatic quartet created by Simon Cowell, have sold 27 million albums since 2004.
Now Divo face competition from junior tenors Il Volo ("the flight"), whose high notes are accompanied by the kind of pubescent screams that Pavarotti never encountered in his pomp.
Piero Barone, 18, Ignazio Boschetto, 17, from Sicily and Gianluca Ginoble, 16, from the central region of Abruzzo, began singing at home and in piazzas.
United as a trio by the Italian version of Pop Idol in 2009, they came to the attention of Jimmy Iovine, the US record company boss who discovered Eminem and Lady Gaga.
They worked with Italian manager Michele Torpedine, who guided Andrea Bocelli to stardom, and a plan was hatched to launch the fresh-faced teenagers as a musical cross between the Three Tenors and Disney-created boyband The Jonas Brothers.
A guest appearance on the US Pop Idol, singing Neapolitan standard "O Sole Mio", prompted admiring tweets from Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.
Fuelled by YouTube clips, the group has now sold 600,000 records worldwide with a rising tide of female hysteria accompanying their shows.
The last citadel to fall is the UK, a situation set to change when Il Volo make their debut on the ITV1 Jonathan Ross Show Christmas Special alongside Tom Cruise tonight. Il Volo's debut album will be released in January by Polydor, home of Boyzone and Cheryl Cole. Its 12 tracks include a medley of Ennio Morricone songs and two new compositions by Diane Warren, a Grammy award-winning writer of big-selling power ballads.
Il Volo say they must complete their apprenticeship before tackling pure opera. Piero told The Independent: "My favourite opera is La Bohème. I think that my passion [to sing it] could be a dream come true one day, maybe when I'm over 40. We are not able to sing opera yet because in order to sing it you need to study for many years."
The geeky one (aka the new Domingo)
Piero Barone, 18
Born Naro, near Sicily
Favourite opera La Bohème.
Does the Spinto tenor have a girlfriend? "Change the question please," he says. "Speak about our sound, our song."
The heartthrob (aka the new Carreras)
Gianluca Ginoble, 16
Born Abruzzo
Favourite opera Turandot.
Booming-voiced Heldentenor says "A great voice is not enough, the work behind an album or tour is so vital."
The powerful one (aka the new Pavarotti)
Ignazio Boschetto, 17
Born Sicily
Favourite opera Rigoletto.
Ignazio has an appetite to match his voice "My mother opened a pizzeria, and now, it is my sister's. When I'm at home, I eat pizza."

*Why does Piero ALWAYS avoid the "Do you have a girlfriend?" question??? The only time he actually ANSWERED it was when I asked an interviewer to ask him. You can read it here. His answer to my question was "I don't have a girlfriend, but remember: Always single, never alone".

P. Diddy heette Il Volo welkom in familie

This is a rough translation of a Dutch article about Il Volo.

P. Didd Called Il Volo Welcome to the Family

AMSTERDAM - In 2009, Il Volo throwing high eyes Italian talent Ti Una Canzone Lascio. Meanwhile, the three boys travel around the world, sold nearly one million records and the new flagship of the Interscope record label.
They're still a little awkward in the locker room of a studio in Hilversum. Overwhelmed by all the success and media attention that goes with it. "We live the dream at the moment, it's unreal," said Gianluca Ginoble.
Il Volo consists of three Italian boys of about eighteen years.Besides, there is Ginoble trio Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto. The purpose of the men? The crossover between opera and pop genre, the largest in the world.
"I want our children see on television and think that I would later do. Opera, as far as what we can do opera called, is so much bigger than it is today. There are only a handful of artists that it end up in the charts, "says Barone.EntourageThe studio in Hilversum is not the first of the three inside them. Not long ago, Il Volo is the set of Entourage, there to shine in the last episode of the popular television series. Characteristic of the rapid speed in which the career of the bunch at the moment.
Ginoble: "Actually we did not that series so great. In Italy it is difficult for foreign series to follow. Of Entourage I had heard, but I had no idea that it would have such an enormous impact. "GermanStarting this month, the special Christmas edition of the self-titled debut album on the shelves. Then the trio not only sings in Italian and English, as the regular version, but also in German. The boys took their own version of Silent Night.
"It's pretty weird to sing in a language that you do not know word. But since the record over the world is a success, we feel that we can do," said Ginoble. "This may sound ridiculous," added Barone on, "but never say never."PrideAlthough its roots lie in Italy, Il Volo, the boys see themselves as an American act. Ginoble: "We are the first ever Italian musicians with a record deal with Interscope. That alone is something to be proud of. We see ourselves as American pop musicians."
The young singer proudly shows a picture on his iPhone, showing a large theater in New York which in giant letters in the name Il Volo shines just below the words "sold out". "Our ultimate goal is to win an American Grammy. It stands for global recognition."ThankThe trio does not have to think about the best moment in their career so far. That was a party in America, which include Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Eminem were also present. Il Volo performed and was warmly welcomed.
"That party is surely the most precious gift we have ever experienced," said Ginoble. "After we sang a song, Diddy came to us for a hug." Welcome to the family, "he said. We were a bit upset. It sounds like a mafia movie, but more impressive is it anyway not, I think. "

Il Divo Not Intimidated by Il Volo

Il Divo interview: 'X Factor

has turned music into a competition'

Il Divo
If there is one act who Simon Cowell can depend on time and again for a successful record, it's Il Divo.

Since releasing their first record almost seven years ago to the day, the multinational four-piece have turned out four hit albums - three of which topped the charts - and shifted over 27 million units.

Ahead of their new LP Wicked Game, which includes covers of Chris Issak and Madonna,Digital Spy caught up with them to find out what it's really like to have Simon as a boss.

You've been saying that your new album is your best yet. What precisely makes it the best?
Urs: "Obviously the song choices themselves are where it starts. The arrangements are also very charismatic and powerful. We've been working with a new guy called Karl who's relatively new to the industry, and he did a great job. The whole thing is a great package."

It seems like there is a fresh energy between you all...
David: "I think so. We had time apart after our last tour and that always helps. We've all got very different personalities but if you spend a lot of time together, it's easy to get into everyone heads and everything starts to merge together. Some time apart means we all have fresh ideas and individual input."

You performed 'Wicked Game' on Red or Black? earlier this year. Why did you choose it as the lead track?
David: "This song, similar to our last album, was the moment when we knew we had something. We'd been trying different things for months before 'Wicked Game' and throwing it all in the bin. This song feels like us, and it was sort of like a centrepiece for the album."
Sébastien: "I remember that Simon Cowell refused the song at the beginning. Sometimes you have to work on him a bit! We were then refused the rights to cover the song by Chris Issak's management, mainly because we wanted to do a translation rather than a straight cover. In the end it was Chris Issak's mother, who is a fan, who convinced them to agree."

You've had three number one albums in the UK; are you hoping for a fourth with this one?
Carlos: "I think it's fair to say we are hoping for that!"
Urs: "What we've realized more importantly is that this album will help us to tour. Promoting is the most important thing, and we want to do it around the world. We're planning some surprises for our new show - we've already played a couple of gigs at the Colosseum which got a fantastic reaction."

Several new opera acts such as Il Volo have launched in recent months. Does that make you nervous?
David: "Not at all! That's the funny thing about our boss - he's turned music into a competition. For us it's about expression and freedom, and there's plenty of room for everyone. That new acts doing a similar thing are coming through is a huge compliment to us."
Sébastien: "There are a few bands who are latching on to what we do. I have respect for ones that put their own twist on it, but then there are those bands who imitate us A-Z - right down to our configuration. This might sound very arrogant, but we consider them tribute bands."
Il Divo

[Has] Simon Cowell heard the whole album yet?
Urs: "Absolutely - he's very involved. We all have opinions on our work too, and somehow we all end up meeting in the middle. Sometimes we have to put our foot down and insist on how we want things to be, but his input is extremely important too.

You're one of the few Syco acts who have lasted this long on the label; do you a good working relationship with Cowell?
Carlos: "We have a great working relationship with him. We've sold 27 million records, which is obviously great for him! The good thing is we don't see Simon very often, but when we do it's always very amicable."

Are you watching this year's X Factor?
David: "I've started watching the US and UK ones this year. I've never really see them before so thought I'd educate myself. It's really addictive because it's so light. Something has been lost from the show since Simon left. There's something about Simon - it's nearly impossible to fill his shoes. All the judges seem to be on board with all the acts all the time - they're afraid to put them down."
Urs: "Simon has this way about him where you believe what he says 100%. His conviction is incredible - you're always really sure that he means what he says, and not a lot of people can do that."

Who are you backing to win?
Sébastien: "It's obviously got to be Misha B, hasn't it? She's incredible."
David: "I have a hard time watching the show because it reminds me of early on in my operatic career when I would audition for things. The feelings and memories of the stress that come out are hard to cope with. You see the approval in their eyes and I connect to that - it's so stressful to watch!"
Urs: "We were stressed out enough when we once went on the show to perform. It's very intimidating and you're surrounded by people who badly want to make it."
